Saving The Last 12 Miles
Preserving nature, heritage and wildlife while co-existing with a sustainable and harmonious community
Join us this Thursday 7/30 at 10am at MP20 for a special edition of Beach Talks about the Corolla Wild Horses
WHY NBPA
The northern 4x4 beaches of Currituck County—which we refer to as “The Last 12 Miles”offer a coastal experience unlike anywhere else on the Outer Banks. With wild horses, natural dunes, and miles of undeveloped shoreline, this area has long been valued by residents and visitors who appreciate its quiet beauty, wildlife, and distinctive character.
In October 2025, a small group of residents came together and decided it was time to try a different approach. Rather than working separately, we formed the North Beach Preservation Alliance (NBPA) to encourage open dialogue with the county and others who care about the future of the 4x4 beaches.

Our mission is preserving nature, heritage and wildlife while co-existing with a sustainable and harmonious community.

We envision a future where our community and environment flourish together. Where all who live, own, service or visit, experience its beauty, value its uniqueness, and champion efforts to protect and preserve these last twelve miles.
NBPA TEAM
local. passionate. dedicated.
If you live on the 4x4 you'll probably recognize many of these faces. We are your neighbors and we care deeply about these last twelve miles. Over the last few decades, we've all seen the changes happen. Although still one of the most unique and beautiful land/seascapes in the country, increased development and tourism, lack of managed access and education are putting both the safety and sustainability of the last 12 miles of in jeopardy. By creating an alliance of residents, property owners, non profits, business/service providers, county officials and visitors, we can work together to ensure economic conditions are met but with the environment and its inhabitants ( both people and wildlife) at the forefront of those efforts. Please reach out to any of us via email alliance@thelasttwelvemiles.com
