Visitors and Guests

The 4x4 beach is the last 12 miles on the Northern Outer Banks. This rare beach experience with no paved roads and no commercial development makes it an appealing place to visit.

The North Beach Preservation Alliance (NBPA) welcomes you and asks for your help in preserving this fragile environment by following these essential tips for safely and respectfully experiencing the Corolla 4x4.

​

Below you'll find tips and tricks, events and information that will help ensure we all do our part to protect and preserve these last 12 miles.

Many OBX visitors make their way to the 4x4 North Beach from all over the OBX.  Whether you are here for a day or here for a week, here's some things to know before you hit the sand.

A Parking Pass is REQUIRED to park on the beach.   Currituck County provides a  limited # of permits issued weekly.  Check Availability

​

NBPA  4x4 Quick Safety Guide

Before You Hit the Sand

  • Tires: Air down to 15–18 PSI and turn off traction control.

  • Speed: 15 mph within 300 feet of pedestrians. Otherwise 35mph.

  • Foreshore: This is an active driving lane—keep it clear of people and gear.

  • Horses: Stay 50 feet away. Never feed. Remain in your vehicle when possible.

  • Turtles: Watch for turtles laying their eggs on the beach and hatchlings, especially at night.

  • Tree Stumps: Watch for and avoid hitting tree stumps on the beach and along the water line.

  • Water & Weather: Avoid driving in the surf and use caution after heavy

  • rain.

  • Respect: The 4x4 is a neighborhood of private property owners. Please drive only on designated sand roads.

DON'T GET STUCK!- Hear from our local experts and learn how to handle various driving situations here on the sand.

BEACH TALKS and EVENTS

Join us every Wednesday from June 17 through August 12 at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Wash Woods Tower at MP 20 for a series of 30-minute educational programs for the whole family. From sea turtles and rip currents to all things salty and sandy, there's something for everyone. No registration is required—just bring a chair and join us!

NOTE TO RENTERS

Avoid placing garbage in outdoor cans overnight when possible. Secure all bags and ensure lids are fully closed. Follow posted trash pickup schedules from rental companies.  Excess trash may be taken to the recycling center at 2030 Ocean Pearl Road: Monday–Sunday 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
